ATV Accidents
According to the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses (NAON), the average annual cost in the United States for non-fatal ATV accidents approaches $1.5 billion. The NAON has cited statistics from groups like the US Consumers Product Safety Commission to illustrate just how serious ATV injuries can be. For instance, the CPSC found in 2003 that ATVs caused over 110,000 injuries serious enough to require emergency room treatment. In 2001, 609 people died in ATV accidents. That number jumped to 621 in 2002. From 1985 to 2003, 7% of ATV injuries involved youth less than 16 years old. Furthermore, ATV use appears to be on the rise, according to the CPSC.
What factors increase the risk of Phoenix ATV injuries?
According to the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses (in conjunction with the Children's Safety Network) the following factors increase risk:
- Failure to ride with a helmet
- Being male
- Using an ATV that's bigger than one recommended for the rider's age and size
- Driving an ATV recklessly or taking undue risks
- Riding an ATV with a passenger
- Operating on highways and surface streets instead of on ATV trails
- Use of three wheel ATVs
What can you do to protect yourself (or your children) from getting hurt on ATVs?
First and foremost, follow manufacturer safety recommendations and wear a helmet. The Children's Safety Network found that helmets may reduce risk of ATV death by over 40% and reduce the risk of non-fatal injuries by 64%.
Second, monitor driving behavior. Do not engage in risky riding, riding on highways, or riding under the influence of drugs, alcohol or prescription medications.
Third, make sure that the ATV is properly suited for your age and size. The NAON found that, in 2001, an amazing 97% of ATV drivers under 16 years old drove vehicles that were bigger than what the manufacturer recommended.
