As car crash lawyers in Phoenix, we were sorry to hear that one person died and two others were injured after a crash on February 9 that occurred on McDowell and 38th Avenue, according to Fox 10. The driver of a black 4-door Nissan suddenly swerved into oncoming lanes, but police aren’t sure why. When this happened, the Nissan hit an SUV as well as a utility truck. The truck rolled over and the SUV then hit a car coming out of a driveway. The passenger in the front seat of the Nissan was killed and the driver and back passenger were seriously injured. Thankfully, no one else was hurt. Our thoughts are prayers are with those who were injured as they begin their road to recovery, and our deepest condolences go out to the family of the passenger who was killed.
Causes of This Phoenix Multi-Vehicle Crash
This crash could have happened for many reasons. It was likely caused by distracted driving, as there was no apparent reason for the Nissan to dart into oncoming traffic. However, it could also be because of faulty repairs completed by a mechanic. If this is the case, the driver could have lost control of the vehicle, which caused it to veer into the other lanes. Finally, the crash could have been alcohol-related. After thorough investigation, police should have more answers.
Phoenix Multi Vehicle Crash Statistics
AZ Central reported that accidents were down overall in 2009, but did not give any statistics for Phoenix multi-vehicle crashes. There were 22,713 total crashes in the city that year. Unfortunately, the Arizona Department of Transportation listed 29,062 crashes during 2010. Also, according to AZ Central, McDowell was listed as one of the most accident-prone roads in the city.

Out of the seven students, the boy was said to be jumping up and down in the bed of the pick-up truck. When the driver pulled over to tell him to stop, that was when the victim fell out of the truck. Motor vehicle crashes happen on a daily basis. That is a sad fact in the world, as well as a public health concern. The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention has mentioned that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among those ages 5 – 34 in the U.S. And every day, people are brought into emergency departments due to injuries from motor vehicle crashes.
Just last weekend, in Peoria, a multi-vehicle crash resulted in the death of 3 and the injury of 1 (ABC15 06/11/2011). Authorities say that a truck with 2 passengers ran a red light at the intersection of 107th and Northern Avenues, and collided with a pick-up truck with 1 passenger. Both vehicles caught on fire and all three died on the scene. A third vehicle was struck, but the 50-year-old man inside only had minor injuries. Police say that impairment may have been a factor in the crash, however, this may never be known because the bodies were burned from the crash.
Drugs other than alcohol (e.g., marijuana and cocaine) are involved in about 18% of motor vehicle driver deaths. These other drugs are often used in combination with alcohol. Therefore, when driving in Arizona, alcohol and drugs should not be taken. When going to a party with alcohol, assign a sober driver beforehand. And if already drunk, then don’t drive at all. Just take a taxi or get a ride with someone sober. This way, accidents will be avoided.

Owning a car and driving it is a privilege not everybody can enjoy. A driver has a responsibility to themselves, their passengers, their car, and those outside of the car. In 2009, more than 5.5 million police-reported motor vehicle crashes in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). About 1.52 million, or 28%, of that number resulted in injury, while 30,797, or less than 1%, of that figure resulted in deaths.
According to ABC 15, a fatal Scottsdale collision occurred at an intersection between 2 vehicles along Carefree Highway and Scottsdale Road. Both drivers involved in the accident were women. One of the vehicles was reportedly travelling westbound, while the other, northbound when they collided at the intersection. The injured woman was airlifted to a hospital, while the other driver and her young daughter refused treatment at the scene. Police are still currently investigating the cause of the crash.
The National Safety Council has recommended a few things to remember when involved in a crash:
- The vehicle should pull over if it is clear, safe, and legal.
- Check all those who are involved in the crash, try to do first aid if necessary.
- Call the police, and if necessary, emergency medical services.
- The names of those involved in the crash, as well as witnesses, should be gathered, if possible.
- Don’t forget to get a copy of the police report.
