  • Arizona: In 2009, 709 fatal crashes occurred in Arizona in which 806 people were killed. Also, 261 of those fatalities involved alcohol and 221 fatalities involved occupants using a safety device. In addition, 321 deaths involved no safety device being used. The peak month for all crashes was December and the peak day was Friday. The peak hour for non-alcohol related fatal crashes was from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The peak hour for fatal DUI collisions in Arizona was from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m.
  • United States: There were 30,797 fatal crashes in 2009.In those accidents, 17,640 drivers and 6,770 passengers were killed. Also, 59 percent of all fatal crashes involved only one vehicle.

Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics

  • Arizona: In 3,029 Arizona motorcycle accidents that occurred in 2009, 122 motorcyclists were killed. Also, 133 motorcyclists and nine motorcycle passengers were killed.
  • United States: During the same year, 4,462 motorcyclists were killed as a result of motorcycle accidents in the United States. This is a drop from 5,312 motorcycle accident deaths in 2008.

Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

  • Arizona: In 2009, 7.94 percent of all pedestrian accidents proved fatal. In Arizona, 122 pedestrians were killed. This is a 2.4 percent drop from the 125 pedestrians killed in 2008.
  • United States: During that same year, 4,092 pedestrians were killed throughout the United States. This is a decrease from the 4,414 pedestrian accident fatalities in 2008.

Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics

  • Arizona: About 1.25 percent of all Arizona bicycle accidents resulted in a fatality. In the year 2009, 25 people were killed in Arizona bicycle accidents. This is an increase from the 19 deaths involving bicycle accidents in 2008.
  • United States: Nationwide, 630 bicyclists were killed in 2009. This is a decrease from the 718 fatalities from bicycle accidents in 2008.

Fatal Alcohol-Related Crashes

  • Arizona: In 2009, there were a total of 5,854 accidents in Arizona, which involved alcohol. Of those, 244 crashes proved fatal. A total of 261 people were killed in Arizona DUI crashes in 2009.
  • United States: Nationwide, there were 11,773 drunk driving deaths in 2008. Alcohol accounted for 32 percent of all United States car accident deaths that year.
