Insurance Coverage
Understanding what your insurance covers is an important step to understanding what actions you may need to take in the aftermath of a serious Arizona car accident. Ideally, the at-fault driver will have adequate insurance to cover your damages. In truth, insurance companies often deny claims and injured victims have to fight to get compensation for their losses.
Arizona Insurance Coverage Requirements
Arizona requires all car owners to have at least:
- Bodily Injury Liability $15,000 / $30,000. These numbers represent the limits on how much your insurance policy will cover. In Arizona, $15,000 is the amount of money your policy may provide for the death or injury of one victim. Also, $30,000 the total amount of injury coverage your policy will provide for the crash. This covers any injuries that your actions may have caused to another person. If you have been injured in a car accident you will either have to pursue damages from the other driver, through your own medical insurance or by filing a personal injury claim.
- Property Damage Liability $10,000. This covers the amount of damage you may have caused to another vehicle or property. In order to seek compensation for the damage caused to your own vehicle, you will need to purchase collision coverage or hold the other driver at fault for the crash.
Arizona does not require you to purchase uninsured motorist coverage.
Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UIM)
While motorists are not required to have uninsured / underinsured motorist coverage in Arizona, it may be a big mistake to go without it. UIM insurance protects the victims of drivers who do not have insurance or do not have sufficient insurance coverage. Such insurance also protects the victim if the accident involves a hit-and-run driver. Arizona is a state that requires the at-fault driver to cover the damages suffered in a crash. When the at-fault driver does not have insurance or is a hit-and-run driver, the victim may not be able to seek compensation for his or her losses. An Insurance Journal report from 2006 ranked Arizona has having the fifth highest level of uninsured motorists (22 percent). This number means that almost one-fourth of all Arizona car accidents involve a motorist without car insurance.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Your Bodily Injury Liability protects someone who is injured by your action, but it will not compensate you for your own injuries. Personal injury protection is a type of optional insurance that will provide you with coverage if you are injured in a crash. If you have adequate health insurance already, this type of coverage may be unnecessary. PIP coverage could, however, provide you with compensation for time spent away from work while recovering, which may not be covered by your health insurance policy.
