Arizona Sideswipe Highway Accident Statistics
There are many statistics that prove Arizona sideswipe highway accidents are not only common, but also very serious, even deadly. The Husband and Wife Law Team at Breyer Law Offices, P.C. wants to share these statistics to encourage drivers to drive safely and perhaps encourage legislation or road construction that reduces or eliminates the amount of crashes we see every year. We want drivers and their passengers to stay as safe as possible.
Statistics for Arizona Sideswipe Highway Accidents
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), there were 14,301 Arizona sideswipe highway accidents in 2010. Sideswipes that occur between vehicles traveling the same direction are more common and total 12,949. Sideswipes that occur between vehicles traveling in opposite directions total 1,352. Both types of sideswipes resulted in 25 fatal crashes and 2,184 injury crashes. Here are some more statistics regarding sideswipe crashes:
- Unsafe lane changes totaled 5,987 in 2010 and caused 10 fatal crashes and 878 injury crashes
- Failure to stay in proper lane resulted in 3,067 crashes in 2010 and caused 40 fatal crashes and 799 injury crashes
- Unsafe passing caused 622 crashes in 2010 and resulted in 6 fatal crashes and 144 injury crashes
- Inattention and distraction caused 12,026 crashes, which resulted in 27 fatal collisions and 3,280 injury collisions
These types of collisions can be extremely dangerous on the highway because cars are traveling at a higher rate of speed and may spin out of control, roll, or even careen off of steep drops. Others may be forced head-on into other cars or stationary objects on the side of the road.
