Van accidents
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently completed a decade long study about van accidents and found some disturbing but enlightening statistics.
Over the period studied, the NHTSA found that over 1,500 people had died in 15 passenger van crashes. 1,100 of the victims were either driving or riding in the van itself. Around 40% of these accidents did not involve other motor vehicles, and more than one out of five fatal accidents involved a rollover.
Many multi-passenger vans have a higher than average center of gravity, which makes them subject to easier tipping in the event of a destabilizing event, such as a collision with another vehicle, a tire blowout or a slide.
The NHTSA study found that van passengers who had been wearing their seatbelts were far more protected than were passengers who did not properly harness themselves. On average, 80% of the fatalities recorded involved passengers who did not wear safety belts. Most 15 passenger van rollovers occurred after the vehicle had left the road and the driver had lost control.
Factors that appear to contribute significantly to van accidents include:
- driver distraction and error
- debris in road/other road upkeep issues, such as poor signage or a faulty traffic signal
- error or negligence of another driver
- maintenance problems with the van or malfunctioning parts
In certain cases, injured victims of a 15 passenger van accident may be able to band together and file a class action suit for damages against a liable party, such as a tour agency, an insurance company, or the government or municipality responsible for maintaining safe road conditions.
